Fantastic communication and attention to detail. On site daily to supervise subcontractors. Project came in on budget and on time. Our project was definitely out of the ordinary, (building a soundproof room with special construction techniques and materials), but turned out great and the results speak for themselves! Would use again if we had to do it over.

Gerald Hatten with Building Concepts did an amazing job with our house and we couldn’t be happier. From the first phone call to signing day, he was always ready to answer our questions. We asked questions constantly, and he was incredibly patient and extremely honest. He would tell us if he didn’t think something would work, either construction or appearance, but not only that, he would go one step further and help us figure out what would work instead. If something got delayed or wasn’t working like we thought it would, he would explain what happened, give us options, and then stand back and patiently wait while we figured out what to do. He was never pushy or condescending to us, but always supportive and encouraging. He was excellent at anticipating problems, and would make sure he didn’t leave us with anything we would have to worry about later. His advice was invaluable, and he always explained the building process. We loved learning about every step, and we now have a far greater knowledge of every building aspect. We are appreciative and pleased with how much he shared. He would be quick to respond with an answer, or quickly find the answer for us. His quality of work is exceptional, and from the very beginning, we never worried about what our house would look like. We always said, “Gerald wouldn’t let it look bad”. And he didn’t. We now have a gorgeous home and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be living here!

My relationship with Gerald started several years ago when he entertained a quote from my woodworking company for his Eclectic, AL job. It started with a custom one of a kind 300 bottle metal wine cabinet and before the job was finished we had built two custom king size bunkbeds made of Douglas Fir and steel, custom built-in cabinetry for 19 closets, fireplace mantles, built-in book case, barn doors, five Spanish cedar garage doors and more. Needless to say Gerald and I have formed a great and professional working relationship that still exist today. Being a retired contractor, and a picky on at that, I can say that Gerald, without questions, is one of the most knowledgeable and easy to work with builder I've had the pleasure to know. My wife and I hired Gerald Hatton to build our modern dream house in the Birmingham Southside location on Red Mountain overlooking Downtown Birmingham. The building site was extremely challenging, in the slide zone with heavy rains impeding the work many times. Gerald was up to the task and able to handle the geological and structural challenges with no problem. We screened many builders and selected Gerald since he is very knowledgable with respect to building materials and technical considerations. Energy efficiency and proper building (drainage, structural integrity, etc.) were very important to me. Finally, communication was flawless. Gerald communicated with me and my wife every day throughout the process. He was even available on the weekends for questions. I recently had a break in and Mr. Hatton was working out of town. He immediately hooked me up with someone who could secure my house until such time the door and window folks could replace the broken door. I cannot say enough about how satisfied we were with our full home remodels and our experience with Gerald Hatton and Building Concepts. After meeting with a handful of contractors, it was clear that Gerald had the knowledge and vision to guide us through the building process. Gerald’s education at Auburn University with a degree in Building Science Engineering and his real world experience gave us the confidence to launch into a project as extensive as our was. His ability to stay "on time and on budget" is surely unparalleled in an industry that is notorious for failing miserably at both.
Gerald helped us prioritize our needs and wants to get us a final product that we were thrilled with, on a budget that was feasible. No detail was too small for Gerald to take seriously and he was always willing to show up with his tools in hand and ready to get dirty in order to save US (the home owner) money.
We were enjoying our first home built by Gerald for about a year when our expanding family caused us to call on Gerald for yet another addition. We braced for the uncomfortable as our second "go round" would have us living in the midst of the construction- with a toddler! But Gerald assured us that our attic/ 1,200 sq ft second story construction would be relatively pain free and it was!
The thoughtfulness he showed our home- protecting furniture and flooring- meant so much to us. We would joke around that upon our return home from work the only way to tell if Gerald and his crews had been there was by the progress made upstairs despite the fact that the only access to the construction was through our main living room.
After about two years of living in our home we received a knock on the door with an offer to purchase. We accepted the offer, sold the home, purchased another home, called Gerald and he six months later we had torn down another small house and built a 3000+ sqft home that is our dream home.

The project consisted of a deck tear-off with the addition of an 18’-0” by 20’-0” conditioned sunroom and a 6’-0” balcony on the long side, a complete reroof and gutter replacement for the entire house, and a new set of steps to the front porch.

Gerald provided a detailed estimate with a complete scope of work and a completion date.
